The Committee of Relatives of the Detained and Disappeared Hasta Encontrarlos

The Committee of Relatives of the Detained and Disappeared Hasta Encontrarlos (“Until We Find Them”) was founded in June 2007, following the enforced disappearance of Edmundo Reyes Amaya and Gabriel Alberto Cruz Sánchez on May 25, 2007, in the city of Oaxaca.

It is an organization made up primarily of relatives of forcibly disappeared persons, including Margarita Cruz Sánchez, Gabriel’s sister, and Nadin Reyes Maldonado, Edmundo’s daughter.

Edmundo Reyes Amaya and Gabriel Alberto Cruz Sánchez were social activists and leading members of the Popular Revolutionary Army (EPR). They were forcibly disappeared in 2007 by police and military actors at the local, state, and federal levels.

Since then, their relatives have pursued a long legal process, demanding their return alive, a state-led search, and justice for those responsible. In 2022, the case reached the Supreme Court. For the first time, a case of enforced disappearance resulted in a ruling that, among other measures, guarantees the right to be searched for, allows unannounced searches in military facilities, mandates comprehensive reparations, and orders the creation of a Special Search Commission—an inter-institutional body in charge of coordinating the search efforts.
