Consorcio Oaxaca, an organization accompanied by PBI, organized the second encounter of women human rights defenders in the Mixe Region. 20 defenders from different regions of the Mixe shared their experiences, and the difficulties that they face as women, indigenous people and human rights defenders. They spoke about political participation, which is one of the main challenges that they are facing, given that – according to their experience – in spite of an agreement with the electoral institute of Oaxaca that aims to guarantee the right to access popular election with equality and universality, Mixe women say that they continue to be the targets of defamation, harassment, discrediting acts, threats, and they are made to feel invisible. During the event that took place in the context of the “International Day to Erradicate Violence against Women” participants launched the “Community Observatory on Political Participation of Mixe Women” which aims to monitor this agreement and report on the obstacles that are created by community level institutions that make it more difficult to access decision-making positions, and at the same time promote the political participation of women.
