In the context of the Global Day of Action Against Open-Pit Mining and the State Day of Rebellion Against Mining, civil society organizations commemorated their fight for their land and territory.
Inhabitants of the communities of the Ejutla Valley and Ocotlán, Oaxaca, demanded that state and federal governments put a stop to the exploration and expansion on their land by the Canadian company Fortuna Silver Mines – this will be due to a lack of consultation with them and the risk faced by land and territory in the state of Oaxaca.
Services for an Alternative Education (Educa) – an organization that receives PBI accompaniment – works together with community and agrarian authorities in resistance to the expansion of the mining project in the Ejutla Valley and Ocotlan; these authorities photographically documented the way in which the mining project “Saint Joseph” began to expand toward the borders of the communities of San Martín de los Cansecos and San José del Progreso.
Agrarian and municipal authorities in the communities have argued that the expansion of the mining project would mean a serious deterioration of the environment in which they live as well as irreversible damage for agriculture, which is their main economic activity.
