On the morning of May 4, 2011, Mr. Quetzalcoatl Leija Herrera, President of the Center for Studies and Projects for Integral Human Development (CEPRODEHI), was brutally murdered in the center of the city of Chilpancingo, Guerrero state.
Mr. Quetzalcoatl Leija Herrera had organised six gay pride marches in the state and was making preparations for a new lesbian-gay movement in June 2011. In addition, Mr. Quetzalcoatl Leija Herrera was encouraging the local Congress to approve the Law of Coexistence (Ley de Sociedades de Convivencia), which would support legal unions between same sex couples, and began a campaign to demand that the authorities - including the State Attorney General - investigate the 16 homophobic crimes committed in 2009 in Guerrero.
