Mexico, D.F. Nepomuceno Moreno Muñoz, member of the Movement for Peace with Justice and Dignity [Movimiento por la Paz con Justicia y Dignidad], was killed in Hermosillo, Sonora State yesterday. He is the second member of the movement led by Javier Sicilia killed in the last two months, after Pedro Leyva Domínguez, a resident of Santa María Ostula, Michoacan, who was murdered on October 6.
Nepomuceno was looking for his son Jorge Mario Moreno Leon, disappeared on July 2010, after he was arrested by police in Hermosillo, according to his statements reiterated during a press conference held by the Movement today. Having received no information from authorities about the whereabouts of his son, he decided to join the march of the Movement for Peace in May to pursue the complaint. He had also participated in the dialogues of Chapultepec with President Felipe Calderon on October 14 and applied for the protection measures for himself and his family.
His death occurred within two months of the murder of Pedro Leyva, the Nahua community member of Santa María Ostula in the State of Michoacan. Pedro Leyva represented his community in the Movement for Peace with Justice and Dignity and participated in several meetings with the federal government to find a solution to the territorial dispute that has left 27 people dead and four missing in the last 2 years.
Rodrigo Escobar Gil, Mexico Rapporteur for the Commission on Human Rights (IACHR), had held a meeting on September, 27 with Pedro Leyva, Ostula representatives, human rights organizations and other Mexican officials, with the aim of monitorin the implementarion of precautionay measures by the Commission.
