Justice for Valentina

Valentina Rosendo Cantú, indigenous me´phaa woman, originally from the community of Caxitepec, municipality of Acatepec in the high mountains of Guerrero, was victim of sexual torture by military members in 2002, a case in which the responsability of the Mexican State was decided by the Inter-American Court of Human Rights (IACHR) in August 2010.


The concerning electoral context

On 1st July 2018 general elections will take place in Mexico, which as well as determining the presidency for the next 6 years, coincide with several local elections.  These will be the largest elections in Mexican history with 3,400 positions being decided.


Morelos y Pavón: Defending human rights in a context of extreme violence

In his most recent report, published on 23rd March 2018, the United Nations Special Rapporteur for Human Rights Defenders, Michel Forst, explicitly mentions those defending human rights in Chilapa de Alvarez, Guerreo and their particularly high levels of risk due to the hostile context in which they undertake their legitimate work: “Human rights defenders from Chilapa, where collective disappearances appear to have occurred with the acquiescence of the authorities, are particularly vulnerable to attacks in the context of organized crime and corruption”.

En su último informe, publicado el 23 de marzo 2018, el Relator Especial de las Naciones Unidas sobre Personas Defensoras de Derechos Humanos, Michel Forst, hace mención explícita de las personas defensoras de derechos humanos de Chilapa de Alvarez, Guerrero, y su particular nivel de riesgo en el contexto muy hostil en el que desarrollan su legitima labor: “Las personas defensoras de derechos humanos de Chilapa, donde las desapariciones masivas parecen haber ocurrido con la aquiescencia de las autoridades, son particularmente vulnerables a ataques en este contexto de crimen organizado y corrupción”.
